Health & Well-Being Award for Nice-Pak

Sustainable wet-wipe manufacturer Nice-Pak has received an award for promoting health and well-being across its workforce.

Recognised by Yu Life, an employee assistance programme, Nice-Pak actively promotes use of an app across its business. The app gives employees easy access to a twenty-four-hour GP service and provides tangible employee rewards in return for adopting healthier lifestyles. Our focus on well-being means that colleagues benefit from regular physical and mental health initiatives such as walking challenges and training sessions on topics such as men’s health, mental health and menopause awareness.

Established over thirty-five years ago, Nice-Pak produces on behalf of major supermarkets and brand owners and employs more than 700 people across operations in Flint, Wigan and Osterweddingen, Germany. Earlier this year Nice-Pak announced that ninety per cent of wet wipes produced in the UK are plastic-free through determined collaboration with customers.

Certified as a Top Employer for the past ten consecutive years, for its excellence in HR policies and people practices. It is recognised alongside organisations such as Pfizer, Bentley Motors and Reckitt.

It has a below-national-average gender pay gap of just six percent and asserts long term tenure among employees, with more than sixty per cent per cent of workers having more than 10 years’ service.

Sammy Rubin, CEO of YuLife explained why Nice-Pak were selected:

“Nice-Pak won the Ignite Award because they’ve done an exceptional job at engaging and igniting their employees to live healthier and happier lives. It’s not always easy to bring people together with different offices, factories and shifts, but through their well thought-through wellbeing strategy and care, they’ve not only encouraged more than 20% of their employees to practice mindfulness, they have also achieved engagement rates and a daily step-count well over the industry average. We couldn’t be prouder to partner with them!”

Nice-Pak International’s human resources director, Deborah Thatcher said:

“We are delighted to have been recognised. The app plays a significant part in our overall health and well-being strategy as it enables us to measure results in all four pillars of our human relations strategy – physical, mental, social and financial health.

“Over the past three months colleagues have walked, worked out, cycled and meditated to collect over four and a half thousand ‘Yu Coin’ currency which can be exchanged for vouchers for high street and online retailers or to make social and environmental donations.   Nice-Pak colleagues have donated over seventy four thousand litres of drinking water to third world countries and planted over three hundred trees.

“Our teams can look forward to the activities we have planned for the remainder of the year.”

Nice-Pak launches workplace policy and education aimed at ‘breaking the taboo’ of menopause

Nice-Pak is looking to cut out the stigma around menopause amongst workers by implementing a policy supporting and educating our workers on the topic.

We have launched a new policy and education programme aimed at helping those going through menopause.

The move comes during 2021’s World Menopause Month, which is observed each October with the aim of increasing awareness of the realities of menopause and combating misinformation.

The new guidelines allows for uniforms to be adjusted for women going through menopause, for example for cotton shirts and lightweight good manufacturing practice coats to be worn during their activities.

A company-wide training course has also been added, dedicated to increasing awareness and guidance for managers on the of the impact of menopause.

Head of UK and Ireland sales at Nice-Pak Nikki Mitchell, who has been an employee at the business for eight years, said: “It is incredibly important to implement a policy like this as the topic of menopause has for so long been an off-limits subject at workplaces across the UK.

“With women making up around 40 per cent of our total staff, we have an obligation to support our colleagues going through menopause and create an environment where we can openly discuss those concerns and feel validated.

“As both an employee that will experience menopause and as a manager responsible for people’s wellbeing, seeing Nice-Pak step up to the plate and create a welcoming space to help our female workers through what can be a difficult stage of their lives is fantastic.”

The common symptoms and misconceptions of menopause form the core of the educational scheme implemented by the company, which is run by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS).

Senior adviser at ACAS Stuart Plage said: “It is vital managers have the skills and knowledge to support colleagues through potentially challenging times when needed.

“Managers can often find it difficult to discuss topics such as menopause with their staff and this regularly comes down due to a lack of understanding or fear they may make things worse with their input.

“However, not providing employees with the necessary help and adjustments at work can be costly.”

Menopause generally occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55, with common symptoms including sleeping problems, weight gain, mood changes, and an increased level of stress and anxiety.

The scheme forms one part of Nice-Pak’s goal to further improve the general health and wellbeing of our 900-strong staff, operating alongside mental health training, an extensive employee assistance programme, and health checks.

HR director at Nice-Pak Deborah Thatcher, who has been with the business for 24 years, said: “While there is increased activity within employers across the UK to implement similar policies, we hope the training with ACAS truly sets us apart in the eyes of our employees.

“Focusing on breaking the stigma of menopause, which is a real and common occurrence, we aim to offer a welcoming and supportive environment to all our team members.”

Earlier this year, Nice-Pak received a Top Employers Institute certification for the 8th consecutive year.

The award recognises leading employers that provide excellent employee conditions, nurture and develop talent throughout all levels of the organisation, and strive to continuously optimise employment practices.

Nice-Pak produce and donate much-needed antibacterial wipes in record time

Key workers produce and donate much-needed antibacterial wipes in record time

Charities and healthcare bodies across North East Wales and Greater Manchester are benefitting from antibacterial wet wipes thanks to Nice-Pak’s key workers.

We have launched a new product in just two weeks – and are donating packs along with our ‘Sani Hands’ antibacterial hand wipes to hospices, NHS bodies and care homes to help them in the fight against COVID-19.

The contribution comes after an increase in demand for hygiene products due to the coronavirus, in particular antibacterial wipes used both in and out of the home.

Donations have been made to care homes including Rhiwlas Care Home, Bod Hyfryd Care Home (both Flint), Llys Medig Care Home (Denbigh), Hafod y Green (Trefnant)  Fern Lodge (Chester) and Dean Wood Manor (Wigan).

Nice-Pak employees also delivered packs to Flintshire housing, Hope House Hospice, Nightingale House Hospice, Wigan and Leigh Hospice, Halton House Hospice,  Wrightington, Wrexham NHS Command Centre, 11 North West Ambulance Service NHS, Flintshire health and social care workers and residents at Flint tower blocks.

Our efforts have also been praised by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham for PPE donations to a local NHS trust.

Deborah Thatcher, HR director at Nice-Pak, said: “We received numerous requests from colleagues and external healthcare organisations for donations to the community.

“As a result, our teams worked incredibly hard to produce a new antibacterial wipe in just two weeks and donated thousands of packs around the region. Developing and manufacturing a new product can take months, so to complete it in 14 days is a record for the business and reflects the passion of our people to help our communities.

“We are really pleased to be able to offer our help during this crisis and hope they play a role in keeping people safe.”

Tracy Livingstone, director of nursing and patient services at Nightingale House in Wrexham, said: “In these unprecedented times it is humbling for the team at the hospice to have this fantastic support of our work.

“Knowing that the team at Nice-Pak are helping us in looking after the patients and families in our care as well as our staff members means a great deal to us.”

Rebekah Ashley, IPU manager at Wigan and Leigh Hospice,  said: “The wipes are absolutely crucial to prevent the spread of infection and are being used throughout the hospice building.”

Liz Darley, registered manager at Dean Wood Manor care home, said: “The staff team have found them very helpful to keep infection control standards at the highest standard possible.”

Susie Lunt, senior manager of integrated services, lead adults at Flintshire County Council, said: “Nice-Pak’s kind donation of PPE is being allocated in a co-ordinated approach to health and social care workers across Flintshire who continue to support our older and vulnerable residents.”

Speaking about a co-ordinated approach to tackling PPE shortages, Andy Burnham said: “I’m proud of how our partners across Greater Manchester have come together to work in a co-ordinated way to make sure our frontline services have the vital PPE they need to do their jobs and I thank them for their Herculean efforts.”

Praise for Nice-Pak’s Key Workers

Nice-Pak have praised efforts of their  key workers for their adaptability during the coronavirus pandemic.

Employees involved in the manufacture of products including  antibacterial, hand sanitising and disinfecting wipes, are dealing with increased demand for such products as well as new ways of working. The hygiene products are used in homes and hospitals all around the country, and those produced by sister company, PDI, are a valued part of the infection-fighting defences being deployed by NHS staff.

Nice-Pak employs 900 people across three factories in Flint, Wigan and Germany.  Operations Director, David Light said: “Our team members are providing critical roles to improve health and hygiene across the UK during the spread of the virus.

“Our priority is to protect their health and wellbeing and our new working practices help achieve this. We have also provided them and their families with access to antibacterial products.”

Just before the coronavirus outbreak, Nice-Pak commissioned research which found that 80 per cent of people viewed wet wipes as very important or important to their household hygiene.

David added: “Public concern about the spread of coronavirus has led to strengthened demand for antibacterial wipes. Some supermarkets are limiting how many packs shoppers can purchase. To help meet demand for these products we have modified cosmetic production lines to focus on antibacterial products.

“Our employees have been fantastic in handling the increased demand for health products alongside the new measures linked to government advice.”
