Key workers produce and donate much-needed antibacterial wipes in record time

Charities and healthcare bodies across North East Wales and Greater Manchester are benefitting from antibacterial wet wipes thanks to Nice-Pak’s key workers.

We have launched a new product in just two weeks – and are donating packs along with our ‘Sani Hands’ antibacterial hand wipes to hospices, NHS bodies and care homes to help them in the fight against COVID-19.

The contribution comes after an increase in demand for hygiene products due to the coronavirus, in particular antibacterial wipes used both in and out of the home.

Donations have been made to care homes including Rhiwlas Care Home, Bod Hyfryd Care Home (both Flint), Llys Medig Care Home (Denbigh), Hafod y Green (Trefnant)  Fern Lodge (Chester) and Dean Wood Manor (Wigan).

Nice-Pak employees also delivered packs to Flintshire housing, Hope House Hospice, Nightingale House Hospice, Wigan and Leigh Hospice, Halton House Hospice,  Wrightington, Wrexham NHS Command Centre, 11 North West Ambulance Service NHS, Flintshire health and social care workers and residents at Flint tower blocks.

Our efforts have also been praised by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham for PPE donations to a local NHS trust.

Deborah Thatcher, HR director at Nice-Pak, said: “We received numerous requests from colleagues and external healthcare organisations for donations to the community.

“As a result, our teams worked incredibly hard to produce a new antibacterial wipe in just two weeks and donated thousands of packs around the region. Developing and manufacturing a new product can take months, so to complete it in 14 days is a record for the business and reflects the passion of our people to help our communities.

“We are really pleased to be able to offer our help during this crisis and hope they play a role in keeping people safe.”

Tracy Livingstone, director of nursing and patient services at Nightingale House in Wrexham, said: “In these unprecedented times it is humbling for the team at the hospice to have this fantastic support of our work.

“Knowing that the team at Nice-Pak are helping us in looking after the patients and families in our care as well as our staff members means a great deal to us.”

Rebekah Ashley, IPU manager at Wigan and Leigh Hospice,  said: “The wipes are absolutely crucial to prevent the spread of infection and are being used throughout the hospice building.”

Liz Darley, registered manager at Dean Wood Manor care home, said: “The staff team have found them very helpful to keep infection control standards at the highest standard possible.”

Susie Lunt, senior manager of integrated services, lead adults at Flintshire County Council, said: “Nice-Pak’s kind donation of PPE is being allocated in a co-ordinated approach to health and social care workers across Flintshire who continue to support our older and vulnerable residents.”

Speaking about a co-ordinated approach to tackling PPE shortages, Andy Burnham said: “I’m proud of how our partners across Greater Manchester have come together to work in a co-ordinated way to make sure our frontline services have the vital PPE they need to do their jobs and I thank them for their Herculean efforts.”

Praise for Nice-Pak’s Key Workers

Nice-Pak have praised efforts of their  key workers for their adaptability during the coronavirus pandemic.

Employees involved in the manufacture of products including  antibacterial, hand sanitising and disinfecting wipes, are dealing with increased demand for such products as well as new ways of working. The hygiene products are used in homes and hospitals all around the country, and those produced by sister company, PDI, are a valued part of the infection-fighting defences being deployed by NHS staff.

Nice-Pak employs 900 people across three factories in Flint, Wigan and Germany.  Operations Director, David Light said: “Our team members are providing critical roles to improve health and hygiene across the UK during the spread of the virus.

“Our priority is to protect their health and wellbeing and our new working practices help achieve this. We have also provided them and their families with access to antibacterial products.”

Just before the coronavirus outbreak, Nice-Pak commissioned research which found that 80 per cent of people viewed wet wipes as very important or important to their household hygiene.

David added: “Public concern about the spread of coronavirus has led to strengthened demand for antibacterial wipes. Some supermarkets are limiting how many packs shoppers can purchase. To help meet demand for these products we have modified cosmetic production lines to focus on antibacterial products.

“Our employees have been fantastic in handling the increased demand for health products alongside the new measures linked to government advice.”

Nice-Pak celebrates silver jubilee

Nice-Pak is celebrating 25 years of manufacture in Europe.

We initially imported product into the UK, prior to the opening in November 1992 of our first manufacturing operation. Since then our manufacturing capacity has grown from one production line in Flint to 30 across Europe.

Our parent company Nice-Pak Products is owned by Robert Julius, whose father, Arthur Julius, invented the world’s first disposable wet napkin in 1957 and whose first global client was fast food chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). We now employ more than 900 people in Europe, across three facilities: in Flint, Wigan and Magdeburg, Germany.

In Europe alone, Nice-Pak produces more than 670m packs of wet wipes annually. In the UK we have recently opened a £40m state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, one of the most advanced of its kind in the world.

The transformation of our business over a quarter of a century is neatly captured in the contrast between these early photographs of the opening of Flint’s single production line back in 1992 by our president Robert Julius and the video below which shows our latest state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in the present day. Nice-Pak is also marking the anniversary internally over coming months.
