‘Fine to Flush’ accreditation for Nice-Pak

Nice-Pak International has achieved a ‘Fine to Flush’ generic accreditation for its flushable plastic-free moist toilet tissue products.

Moist toilet tissue supplied by Nice-Pak making use of the SureFlush XP12 technology will be able to display the ‘Fine to Flush’ logo on pack.

The ‘Fine to Flush’ standard was introduced by Water UK, which represents water companies across the UK.

Nice-Pak’s research and development head of nonwoven, Matt Storey, said: “We are delighted to have attained this certification on SureFlush XP12 following two years of hard work and collaboration with the Water Research Centre (WRc). This plastic-free moist toilet tissue has been designed to meet the specific needs of the UK sewer system.”

WRc developed the flushability standard in conjunction with Water UK earlier this year.

WRc’s  Senior Consultant, Andy Drinkwater said: ” The certification of Nice-Pak’s Sureflush XP12 is a most welcome step forward. The product is very different from many traditional wipes in terms of its flushability credentials. Retailers should be confident that by using SureFlush XP12, and subject to confirmatory testing, their own branded products should be ‘Fine to Flush’ compliant”

Fine to Flush’ certification is only granted for the small minority of wet wipes which are designed to be flushed and have passed the rigorous seven step process required by the standard.  The vast majority of wipes including baby wipes, make up removal wipes and household cleaning wipes are not designed to be flushed and should be disposed of in a bin.

Nice-Pak actively encourages compliance with the industry Code of Practice on ‘Do Not Flush’ labelling and supports industry-wide awareness on responsible product disposal.

Nice-Pak Announce Sustainability Pledges

As an industry leader we consider it our responsibility to help drive change in our area of expertise.

To this end we have made six pledges to help accelerate progress to a more sustainable future.  Our Global Sustainability Pledges include a commitment that plastic-free, sustainable products will feature in every customer proposal from 2020. They also feature strong commitments on packaging, brand transparency and will report of progress in the implementation of our industry’s agreed Code of Practice on ‘Do Not Flush’ labelling.

Publication of the Sustainability Pledges coincides with Nice-Pak launching the ‘ultimate in sustainable baby wipes’.  Its new ‘Nice ‘n Clean Aqualettes’ brand features plastic-free wipes, a pre-biotic formula and 100 per cent recyclable packaging.

Michael Staton, Nice-Pak International CEO, said: “We wanted to take our sustainability efforts to the next level through a series of significant commitments which will apply to our businesses across the globe. Our product development programme reflects the fact that we are fully aligned with customers and consumers on the global significance of environmental issues.

“In Europe, the launch of ‘Nice ‘n Clean Aqualettes’ demonstrates the progress we are making in bringing these principles to life.

“This unique combination of materials from sustainable sources, natural ingredients and recyclable packaging is the result of creativity and determination by our team to ensure we lead the sector in care for the environment.”

Nice-Pak launch the UK’s first recyclable packaging for wet wipes

Nice-Pak is delighted to have launched 100 per cent recyclable packaging as part of our efforts to improve the sustainability of our products and packaging. This breakthrough marks the culmination of eighteen months of development work aimed at aligning more closely with consumer environmental aspirations.

A Kantar survey* involving 5000 people found that 42 per cent of respondents were keen for manufacturers to make packaging recyclable.

Calling on over 70 years of collective industry experience, the Nice-Pak packaging team has worked closely with material suppliers to develop both film and resealable labels which, together, can be recycled through existing facilities for carrier bags.

With factories in Flint, Wigan, Germany and the USA, Nice-Pak offer wipes across four categories including baby, cosmetic, household & personal care. In the first instance, the new packaging will be made available through the company’s Aqualettes® baby wipes brand.

Peter Bushell, Nice-Pak International Packaging Development Manager, said: “We believe that both customers and consumers alike deserve more choice in meeting their environmental aspirations.

The mono-polymer project has been technically challenging but we are proud to have achieved this UK first as part of our on-going efforts to improve the environmental footprint of our products.  We have strived to render this product ‘recycle ready’ to support the future development and harmonisation of the recycling infrastructure. “

Wet Wipe Industry First – Nice-Pak leads the way in label recycling

Nice-Pak is  the first wet wipe manufacturer to implement RafCycle®,  an innovative recycling concept, designed by supply chain partner UPM Raflatac. The scheme offers a new life for label waste otherwise destined for landfill.

“As part of our ongoing sustainability programme we were looking for a more environmentally friendly solution to dispose of the backing paper received from our label suppliers. The service gives new life to self-adhesive label waste, it is de-siliconised before being recycled into new materials. This provides numerous benefits for the environment, printers, packers and brand-owners. ” explains Peter Bushell, Packaging Development Manager.

There are plans to roll out the concept to other Nice-Pak wet wipe manufacturing facilities in the UK and Germany.
